Meeting Notes – November 15

by Caleb

A very short meeting.  Talked about the LAN (which will have it's own page shortly) and the possibility of switching the meeting day to Friday.  What do people think of that?  Good, bad, ugly?  Can/will anyone new come?  Leave a comment or reply to the email.  Either would make me happy.

Here there be code. This represents the work as of the ending of the second Game-A-Month meeting.

Added from the first set was a player class that holds pieces, a piece class which is an entity and has the appropriate sprite and location for the piece, and the ability to move.

Here is the code and fish from GRID.

Also, this was totally updated last week.  And definitely not at the meeting on the 18th.

Imagine Cup Registration Open

by joel

Registration for the 2012 Imagine Cup is open. We'll go over it a bit at the next meeting but feel free to get a head start and register today http://www.imaginecup.com/.  We'll see if we can get Microsoft to send a rep to start us off again like they did last year (and provide some free swag.)

Meeting Notes – October 4

by Caleb

Two meetings down, however many weeks are left in the semester to go.  Good news, though: So far more meetings means more people.  If we keep this up we'll be the most popular group ever.  But moving on...

The second meeting was mostly more of the same from the first.  There's still a LAN planned and a Game-A-Month is planned to start next Tuesday.  So, what should does this mean for you?  Well, it means to bring your laptop so you can follow along (or go off on your own) while we work on G.R.I.D. The first part of the GAM will be setting up everything we'll be using and the very basics of the game.  If you want to start by downloading the tools you'll need, we're going to be coding in ActionScript3 (don't worry about knowing any of it, it's pretty simple) using FlashDevelop for the environment and FlashPunk for the game engine.  Don't worry too much about installing anything, that's step one on Tuesday.

Also, if you haven't signed up for the Google Group, it's super easy.  That'll get you in on all our emails, so you'll be the first to get any information we send out.

Finally, to finally shut Feole up since a lot of people wanted to know, we have a CollegiateLink page from the school.  It's updated with our plans that go through the school, and has a little wall to post things on.  Pictures from events also go here, which is nice since we've been listed as "Club With The Sexiest Officers"*.

Next meeting is Tuesday, it's on the Google Group's calendar (which if you sign up for the mailing list, you can see our calendar).  It's also when we start G.R.I.D., so come and make a game.

Meeting Notes – September 27

by Caleb

So, this must mean that it's shortly after the first meeting of the semester, huh?  Well, I apologize for the delay in getting this up, but better late than never.  So, onto the recap!

The first meeting was a little underwhelming in turnout, so it's likely that we'll go over things again this Tuesday, but as a small recap we went over the plans for this semester.  Already planned is a LAN party for November 12-13.  We have Cumnock Hall reserved, are contacting sponsors, and a registration page will be up by midweek this week.  We're planning on a max number of around 75-85, with it being first come first served.  It's free and open to the general public, so if you and some friends want to show up, register and do so.  Also on the docket is a Game-A-Month led by myself.  The game is called GRID (for those who were members in the beginning, yes it's the same one we had planned on doing before), and is a combination checkers-go/reversi non-turn-based board game.  I have it planned to take either four or five meetings, and will talk more about what you'll need if you want to code along for the first Game-A-Month meeting.

So that's what you missed.  Next meeting is October 4.  Hope to see you all there.

The end is nigh

by Matt

So, the semester is almost over, and as such we have all been pretty darn busy. Meetings are still happening on Tuesdays and we are part way into our first GAM event and making a clone of Galcon called Planet Wars. While that is very exciting in it's own right, I am actually posting here to shed some light on a couple very awesome and very popular game development competitions going on in the near future. I highly recommend everyone try their hardest to compete in at least one. Win or not, you'll come out of it feeling very accomplished, I promise.

The first competition coming up is Reddit Game Jam. This is a 48 hour gamejam starting 12/10/10 @ 22:00 UTC. More info can be found at the link.

Secondly, the most historic 48 hour gamejam on the Internet, Ludum Dare. This next competition will be their 19th 48 hour competition, and the last one saw over 200 entries. It will take place from December 17-20, 2010 (the extra day is for people participating in the "jam" and not the competition).

Last but not least is Java4k. This competition is a bit more relaxed in the time department, but more challenging technically. The goal is to make a Java game using only core SDK libraries, and when all is said and done (and compiled into bytecode) your game must be under 4k. No remotely loaded content either! This competition is pretty interesting and will hopefully teach you a lot of content generation algorithms if you choose to participate. You have until February 28th, 2011 to submit a game into this competition.

If any of you are interested in participating in some or all of these events, don't hesitate to talk about them on the mailing list. I think it would be a ton of fun, and also help you do well, to have meetups for these events. If you choose to try the Java4k one, you might want to get together a few times over break even. The choice is yours.

Anyway, that's about all for now and I will see you all on Tuesday for the continuation of our GAM Planet Wars fun.

Post-Meeting Notes for 11/23/2010

by Caleb

So, as Matt had mentioned this meeting was about the unveiling of the first Game-A-Month.  Matt's going to be taking the lead on this one, and we'll be using Flash, specifically Flixel (we'll be using the standard download build).  There are tutorials on how to set up Flash/Flixel as well as tutorials and samples of the language aplenty, so please take some time to familiarize yourself with it.

I hope to see everyone pumped up and ready to actually get games done at the next meeting.
